Nightstands: The Piece That Completes a Bedroom

The nightstand does more than hold a lamp. It frames the bed, defines the bedside, and finishes a bedroom. Here is how to choose the right one.

The nightstand gets overlooked because it serves the bed. Everything orbits a bed in a bedroom, and the nightstand is the quiet piece on either side — functional, expected, easy to underestimate. That is a mistake. It is the last piece you see before you fall asleep and the first you reach for when you wake, and when it is right, the whole room feels finished.

Eichholtz makes more than twenty nightstand models — upholstered, wood, metal, and mixed-material, in sizes that work beside a platform frame or a deep panel bed. The range is broad because the right nightstand is specific to your room. Here is how to think about choosing one.

The nightstand is not just a surface. It is the piece that completes the bed — and the room.

What a Nightstand Actually Does

The function is simple: a surface at the right height, with storage below. On that surface you keep a lamp, a glass of water, your phone. In the drawer or on the shelf below you keep everything you would rather not look at but need close by — a charger, reading glasses, a book you meant to finish last year. That is it. The function has never changed.

What changes is how the piece does it, what it is made from, and how it reads in the room. A nightstand that disappears into the wall is a missed opportunity. A nightstand that holds the bedside together — that connects the lamp to the surface to the drawer in a way that looks considered — is the detail that elevates a well-furnished room into a well-designed one.

  • Height. The top surface should be level with or within an inch of the top of your mattress. A surface too low requires a downward reach; one too high creates an awkward stretch. Most Eichholtz nightstands fall in the 24-to-28-inch range, calibrated for standard mattress heights.
  • Surface area. You need room for a lamp base and three or four small objects. Fourteen inches square is generous. Smaller works when a lower shelf provides overflow space.
  • Storage type. A drawer keeps things out of sight — right for chargers, medications, anything used in low light. An open lower shelf is more accessible and reads lighter visually; right for a book or a small object you want visible.
  • Left and right configuration. Many Eichholtz nightstands are offered in mirrored left and right versions so the drawer opens toward the bed on both sides. Two pieces from the same model, ordered in opposing configurations, give the room a composed and intentional look without being rigidly matched.

Material: The Conversation With the Bed Frame

The nightstand's material is in direct dialogue with the bed. They sit next to each other every night, and whatever contrast or harmony exists between them defines the look of the entire room from the doorway. It is worth thinking through before you order.

If the headboard is upholstered, a nightstand in wood or metal creates a contrast that keeps the bedside from reading as a single soft mass. If the headboard is already wood or lacquered, an upholstered nightstand adds texture without competing. And if the headboard and nightstand are from the same collection — as many designers and clients choose — the room reads as intentional from the first glance.

Brass is the detail that connects most materials across a bedroom. A wood nightstand with a single brass drawer pull ties to a brass chandelier overhead, to a brass-framed mirror on the dresser, to the lamp base on the opposite side. It is the connective thread through a well-considered room, and it is why so many Eichholtz pieces carry a note of brass even when the dominant material is something else entirely.

Three Directions in the Collection

The Eichholtz nightstand range runs from understated to expressive. These three pieces represent distinct approaches to the same function — and three different answers to what a bedroom can feel like.

Upholstered velvet. The Nightstand Velutto is covered in rich velvet with a tailored frame. It belongs in bedrooms where the goal is warmth and depth — beside a linen or boucle headboard, under a warm-tone lamp. The velvet surface and the lamp together create a bedside vignette that reads layered rather than transactional. This is the piece for rooms where comfort is the dominant note.

Dark wood and brass. The Nightstand Nottingham Left is built in dark oak veneer with a refined brass drawer pull. It reads classic in a traditional bedroom and holds its ground in a contemporary one. The Nottingham collection is designed as a full bedroom suite — bed frame, dresser, nightstands — so the pieces sit together with an inherent coherence. Ordered in left and right configurations, the two nightstands mirror each other cleanly without looking uniform.

Expressive character. The Nightstand Rosemberg brings a more distinctive presence — a piece crafted with enough visual interest to hold the bedside on its own merits, not just serve it. For rooms built to feel collected and personal rather than assembled from a single suite, this is the kind of nightstand that shifts the bedroom from furnished to designed. It reads as something chosen with intention.

What Goes on the Surface

The nightstand surface is one of the most-photographed spots in a styled bedroom, and it is chronically over-styled. The approach that works: a lamp, one thing with height, and one small object. The lamp provides the light. Something with height — a small vase with a single branch, a sculptural piece, two books stacked — adds a vertical note to the composition. Something small — a tray, a candle, a decorative object — closes it. Everything else comes off.

A small tray on the surface is useful precisely because it collects the small objects into a grouping that reads as intentional, and it makes the surface easy to clear completely when you want to. The Eichholtz accessories collection includes trays, hurricane lanterns, and small sculptural pieces designed for exactly this kind of bedside use. The nightstand is where the furniture collection meets the accessories collection, and the combination is what finishes a bedroom properly.

Seeing It in Context

The best way to choose a nightstand is to see it beside a bed. Proportions that look generous in a photograph can read as overwhelming beside a low platform frame, and a piece that seems compact on screen can anchor a room perfectly. At Eichholtz Las Vegas, the bedroom pieces are shown together in the showroom — nightstands alongside bed frames and headboards, with lamps in place — so you can judge scale and material for your own project before committing.

For designers working on behalf of clients, bring the floor plan. We can work through options at scale, pull fabric and finish samples, and walk through the full bedroom range. Most in-stock pieces ship from the Eichholtz warehouse network in two to four weeks — significantly faster than the twelve to twenty-four weeks typical for made-to-order luxury furniture.

We are open now at Tivoli Village, Suite 160 in Summerlin — and the full nightstand collection is available both in the showroom and online.
